The story
Seattle-built Siren let women control who could even see their photos, and its daily-question feed made wit the first impression instead of selfies. Critically adored and chronically underfunded, it shut down in 2017 while Bumble scaled a similar women-first ethos to the mainstream. A well-designed app that ran out of runway, not ideas.
What it did well
- Photo visibility controlled by women
- Personality-first daily questions
- Thoughtful safety design
Why it faded
- Shut down in 2017
- Never left the Pacific Northwest
- Out-funded by competitors
